Why Wheatgrass is So Beneficial

8 Ways Wheatgrass is Amazing for Your Body

Wheatgrass benefits our health in so many ways.  It is so nutrient-dense! It’s one of the most nourishing foods on Earth, in fact, even after teaching and coaching the alkaline diet and nutrition for over 17+ years, it still baffles me that it’s not a more regular food in people’s homes – even now as we move to so much more of a green-juice-friendly culture!

My belief is that health should be simple and I think a lot of people believe that consuming wheatgrass can be expensive and a bit of a hassle. But in this guide I’m here to show you that is absolutely not the case. Getting a daily shot of wheatgrass is really simple, and SUCH a powerful habit to form…

The benefits of using wheatgrass I’ve seen in my own life…

Since I’ve been using wheatgrass I’ve noticed my energy levels go sky high, my skin clear up and colds, coughs, and illnesses disappear forever – and these are just a few of the things I’ve noticed!

Not to mention a fabulous level of energy that is sustained all day long!

Here’s just a handful of ways wheatgrass can help you reach your perfefct health:

  • 30mls of freshly squeezed wheatgrass juice (a wheatgrass shot!) is equivalent in nutritional value to 1kg of leafy green vegetables
  • Wheatgrass contains over 90 minerals, including high concentrations of the most alkaline minerals: potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium
  • It contains the essential enzymes: Protease (assists in protein digestion), Cytochrome Oxidase (a powerful antioxidant), Amylase (facilitates digestion), Lipase (a fat splitting enzyme), Transhydrogenase (strengthens the heart muscle) & Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) (found in all body cells and is known for its ability to lessen the effect of radiation and slow cellular aging)
  • Just one teaspoon of green powder – containing wheatgrass powder, weighing a mere 3.5 grams, is nutritionally equal to an entire spinach salad weighing a full 50 grams – it packs a punch!
  • Wheatgrass has more vitamin C than oranges and twice the vitamin A as carrots!
  • Wheat grass juice helps your body to build red blood cells which carry oxygen to every cell.
  • By increasing the oxygenation the body you can help offset smog and carbon monoxide and increase your endurance during physical exercise
  • It also contains 19 amino acids, the building blocks of protein making this one of the most impressive single sources of nutrients on Earth!

Why is Wheatgrass So Darn Good For Us?

Alkaline Recipe BookWheatgrass nourishes the body by infusing it with an incredible amount of alkalinity, along with an increased nutrient absorption for essential nutrients like electrolytes and antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E. If you want to stay vital, vibrant and energized and prevent chronic diseases as you get older, creating an alkaline environment is essential.

Diet-induced acidosis (high levels of acid resulting from consistently consuming acid-forming foods and drinks) is an all-too-common problem today. Cancers and other diseases flourish in acidic environments, but cease to exist in a mildly alkaline environment (more on the alkaline diet explained here).

What gives wheatgrass the ability to neutralize acidosis? Most powerfully, it comes down to one thing: chlorophyll.

Chlorophyll has been shown to help naturally balance the body’s pH level and protect cells. This is one of the reasons that chlorophyll consumption is associated with anti-aging effects ranging from younger-looking skin to better weight management.

My Four Favourite Reasons to Consume Wheatgrass Every Day

wheatgrass wins

Before I get onto where and how to get wheatgrass, I’m going to list out the four main reasons why I love it so much:

1. Wheatgrass Builds Blood:

Many health experts including Robert Young (pH Miracle) and Steve Meyerowitz (Nature’s Finest Medicine) have highlighted that the chlorophyll molecule in wheatgrass is almost identical to the hemoglobin molecule in human blood.

The only difference is that the central element in chlorophyll is magnesium and in hemoglobin it is iron.

Due to this inherent similarity, the human body can easily transform chlorophyll into hemoglobin increasing the red blood cell count as well as the blood’s capacity to deliver oxygen and other nutrients to the body’s cells (Hagiwara, 1985).

Chlorophyll has been shown to build red blood cells quickly, normalize blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body, destroy poisonous carbon dioxide, release free oxygen and promote higher metabolism and stimulated enzyme systems. On top of all of these benefits, consuming chlorophyll from wheatgrass is a highly effective way to alkalize the blood and energize the body!

2. Wheatgrass Cleanses the Body:

Wheatgrass is an extremely beneficial food in terms of both its cleansing capabilities and its nutrient density.

The contents of wheatgrass juice and powder (green drink) are reported to be within the region of approximately 100 separate elements with scientists dubbing it a ‘complete food’.

According to ‘The Wheatgrass Book’ (Wigmore, 1985), just 140g of fresh wheatgrass offers the same nutritional value as over 3kg’s of fresh green vegetables!

That’s a great way to get your daily fresh vegetable quota rocking – all from one wheatgrass shot.

Wheatgrass is a great source of vitamins B, C, E and carotene which are hugely effective in destroying and eliminating free radicals and cleansing the body.

Wheatgrass is also highly regarded for its ability to cleanse the blood, organs and gastrointestinal tract.

Because it is also high in saponin, wheatgrass offers excellent support to the lymphatic system, helping to carry away hundreds and thousands of toxins from the cells of the body.

And according to Viktoras Kulvinskas, Co-founder of Hippocrates health Institute and publisher of the best seller Survival in the 21st Century, wheatgrass helps to:

‘Detoxify the body by increasing the elimination of hardened mucous, crystallised acids and solidified, decaying faecal matter…It is the fastest, surest way to eliminate internal waste and provide an optimum nutritional environment’.

These are just some of the cleansing and detoxifying benefits, and I have barely scratched the surface with regards to listing its nutritional content.

Put most simply, whether you are looking to undertake a formal cleanse, or simply try to add more nutrition to your diet – these reasons alone are enough to consider adding wheatgrass to your daily lifestyle.

3. Wheatgrass Has High Amino Acid Content:

You may have heard the expression before that – amino acids are the building blocks of protein.

They are absolutely essential to our growth and cell regeneration. It is the astonishingly high amino acid content in wheatgrass that is leading to many bodybuilders and gym-goers incorporating fresh (a wheatgrass shot) or wheatgrass powder into their daily routine.

Wheatgrass is so impactful because it is a complete protein and contains, amongst others, the following amino acids: arginine, serine, abscisic, lysine, aspartic acid, glycine, alanine, methionine, leucine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, and valine.

4. Wheatgrass Fights and Protects Against Illness:

Organic wheatgrass powders and juices are an extremely effective way of boosting the body’s immune system to fight against and recover from illnesses and ailments.

Wheatgrass is a great source of beta carotene, contains most of the B vitamins and vitamins C, E, H and K, and also contains over 90 different minerals and 19 amino acids.

It also contains several active enzymes which play a major role in breaking down fats, undertaking biological functions and assist hugely in weight loss.

Of the 90 minerals found, many of these are very alkalizing and include calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium and iron.

Many of the health positives of wheatgrass stem from the fact that it is a living food. Being highly anti-bacterial, consuming wheatgrass will help to alkalize and detoxify the lymph and blood cells, helping the body to rebuild and transport toxins out of the body quickly and effectively.

Again, coming back to the chlorophyll content of wheatgrass – this can protect the body from carcinogens more effectively than any other food.

Studies conducted on animals have shown that wheatgrass consumption has reduced the absorption of a number of very serious carcinogens whilst strengthening cells, detoxifying the liver and neutralizing polluting elements within the blood.

But I thought wheat was acidifying? Aren’t we supposed to avoid gluten?

Good question…but

The simple answer is: wheat is acid-forming, pro-inflammatory and a source of oxidative stress.

The fully grown, harvested, stored, milled and stored wheat plant is highly acidifying.

But as with almost every grain, when sprouted it is very alkaline, and this is certainly the case with wheatgrass.

Do not worry about wheatgrass being acidifying, it really, really isn’t! Sprouted wheat contains no gluten!

Where to Get Wheatgrass

detox. wheatgrass superfood.

There are three main ways to incorporate wheatgrass into your life. There are pro’s and con’s (sort of) of each, and getting a bit of each is probably best to get the full and awesome benefits explained above!

Wheatgrass Supplements

Wheatgrass (and other grass) supplements are powdered greens, condensed down, that you simply mix with water and drink! There are many, many, grass supplements out there so make sure you pick one that works for you. Here are my main tips to make sure you’re getting a good one, and after that it is really down to taste!

  • Make sure it is organic
  • Make sure it is powdered juice, not just powdered plant
  • Make sure it isn’t heat-dried
  • Make sure there are no fruits or sweeteners added
  • Make sure it doesn’t contain spirulina or any other algae, which are acidifying

Ross’ Green Drink Recommendation

This is the big-boy, most important supplement. I recommend this for everyone. If you want to get wheatgrass easily and daily, this is the most economical and straightforward way to do it – and you can get started right away.

A green drink is a powdered supplement, usually made of a combination of grasses, vegetables, fruits, algae, and other foods – and often contains a high amount of wheatgrass.

The combinations range from just one food (wheatgrass, barley grass, spirulina, etc.) through to dozens (some contain over 50 different ingredients).

There are a few ingredients I don’t love to see in green drinks too:

  • High Fruit Content: a little is OK, preferably there isn’t any. Low sugar fruits like tomato, lime, lemon, grapefruit are fine, but I don’t like to see a lot of higher sugar fruits in there
  • Mushrooms: again, a little medicinal mushroom is fine (reishi, cordyceps etc), but I don’t like this to be a big component
  • Xylitol: this sweetener is highly refined and not really tested long-term for human health. Makes a good toothpaste, but not proven yet as a safe sweetener

A perfect blend in a green drink hits all of my ‘Triple A’ goals: alkaline; antioxidant-rich and anti-inflammatory.

This is why I personally use Alkamind Daily Greens right now – it has strong alkaline (wheatgrass etc.), antioxidant (beets etc.) and anti-inflammatory (turmeric) ingredients, and tastes awesome.

And of course, it ticks all the boxes in terms of quality, organic, non-GMO.

I really felt the difference when I started using it.

Ross’ Recommended Green Drink is

  • Alkamind Daily Greens

Fresh Wheatgrass

Buying your wheatgrass fresh from a juice bar is also a great way to get your wheatgrass health fix! Make sure they snip and juice the grass right in front of you though! I’ve seen some sneaky bars in Sydney having it delivered, already juiced!

A lot of the nutrients in the grass can be lost if you don’t have it fresh.

Having your wheatgrass freshly juiced is a great way to feel the instant energy hit, it is so noticeable!

Growing Your Own Wheatgrass

Making wheatgrass juice

And finally, you can grow and juice your own! This is great fun, not all that time consuming, and not all that expensive either! All you need are:

  • Some space
  • Wheatgrass seeds
  • Sprouting trays or an automatic sprouter (such as an EasyGreen)
  • Patience
  • A pair of scissors
  • A masticating or hand wheatgrass juicer

In that order.

Note, you can’t grow wheatgrass in a standard sprouter and you can’t juice wheatgrass in a standard juicer. But having said that, the masticating juicers such as the Hurom brand are far better quality in my opinion anyway, you’re better off buying one of these anyway.

So there you have it! Can you think of any reason not to start having your daily wheatgrass juice?

Hello, I need some help if you can. I’ve been making what I call my green gunge to drink at night, which I was told would do best if drank at night before bed. It consists of Spinach,, kale, cucumber, parsley, garlic, ginger, apple cider vintage, turmeric, honey and sometimes I put a kiwi in too. Is this something I could add some organic Wheatgrass powder to? I have some from Costco that says 100% wheatgrass powder nothing else.. Is drinking wheatgrass the only way to take it or can the powder be sprinkled on breakfasts, salads or in soups?
Thank you for reading this. Hope you can enlighten me ????

I am the son of a Kansas wheat farmer. I have my grandpa’s hands. They are weathered and have pre-cancerous lesions that were recommended to have chemical peel (burn) I have been using wheat grass to rub on them in the morning instead and getting tremendous results and I now use internally as well . Just so you know, the proper way to ingest wheat grass for internal use is CRITICAL. Don’t just swallow a shot Hollywood style, put an ounce in your mouth and swoosh/gargle it around so it can absorb through your gums (also good for your teeth this way) if you swallow straight down you will get little benefit as your stomach acids just destroy your wheatgrass juice. I see many people totally wasting it. Also, the wheat I still grow on the farm is not certified organic but is non-GMO. This is important, but thankfully most wheat berries are non GMO. Finally a bushel of wheat (appx 60 lbs) is less than 5 bucks-this lasts me about six months of juicing-this is by far the best nutritional product in the world for the money IMHO.

Hi, I just started using wheatgrass powder 3 days ago and I am already seeing a positive change in how my digestive system feels (I have stomach and digestive issues) and I have had regular bowel movements. The thing is, my appetite has decreased a bit and I got a little nausea on the 2nd and 3rd day (today)
I like the results already except for the decrease in appetite as my goal is to get my digestive system back in order and regain some weight I lost. I’ve been to doctors already about my digestive issues and had lots of tests done.
On to my actual question…I saw some websites saying wheatgrass is not for long term use as it has the detoxifying effect. I just want to know how would you recommend I use the wheatgrass powder I am currently taking? I am taking 1/2 tsp powder which was the dosage recommended to me. Can I use this long term everyday? Should I only use it for a period of time, stop and then do another detox after a few months? Should I use it every other day if I want to use it long term? I guess my what I am getting at is if I can use it constantly or is it not recommended to that. Thanks!

I have fibromyalgia and grow my own barley grass to juice. Nutritionally, barley grass is very comparable to wheat grass. I only use organic seeds. Have a twin-gear masticating juicer.

It really, really helps with fibromyalgia symptoms, and I juice every day!! Also, I ‘ground’ daily, and try to get in sunshine for vitamin D every day, too.

Since adding organic New Zealand wheatgrass powder to my freshly made fruit and veg juices I can honestly say it’s the best remedy for my constipation. I have a sluggish system and have tried various over the counter remedies and have found they nearly always gave me cramping. I have now found the right amount for me personally which is one tablespoon in a large glass every 3-4 days. I don’t suffer from bloating or discomfort anymore. Does anyone know if there’s any difference in the wheatgrass from China? it’s cheaper, that’s all I know.

    • Robin Reply

As to slow digestion; try upping your fiber intake. I’ve found 2 Tablespoons flaxMEAL mixed with about 1/4 cup orange juice works like a charm. Also moving around gets the system working well.

As far as Chinese wheatgrass; you’re not looking for cheaper when it comes to your health- you’re aiming for health. The closer your source the better, and if you’re talking aboutt powder just remember- there is no-one who checks the purity of things that come from other countries and there have been a lot of products from China that have been filled with all sorts of unhealthy substances- some which have seriously endangered people’s and animals lives.

I don’t know if anyone else has asked this question, but is it fine to take mixed in with my yogurt and muesli at breakfast, or sprinkled on top of my salad and mixed to moisten? In other words, do I still gain the benefit from it if I don’t take it in a totally liquid drinkable form? Is there any way that one should not consume it? For instance, I wouldn’t put it in soup while cooking, but is it okay to sprinkle it on top once it’s in the bowl, or does any warming harm it? It really does taste unpleasant on its own, and I only drink water. I’ve found it’s much more palatable using it the other ways I described. Thanks.

    • Daleena Reply

Yes!!! You can mix it with yogurt. I would try the plain greek Yogurt due to the probiotic benefits of it. Add a bit of palm sugar which will not spike your glucose levels like refined sugar, but if you can’t get palm sugar try a touch of honey or i a smoothie. You as well can absolutly put in on your salad or mix it in with your soup. But DO NOT COOK IT. I hope this helps, and God bless and good luck to you.

Wheatgrass should not be taken with coffee. Coffee is very acidic and would
Defeat the health benefits. Fresh is always best on an empty stomach so your blood can quickly absorb it. Powder is not the same, but still not good to take with coffee.

Now when i drink it, it has that strong grass taste at first then a slight sweetness to the aftertaste. Does this mean that the grass has somehow been sweetened? or is this the natural taste? why is it bad if it is sweetened?please reply. 🙂

Nick, it could be, but they should explain this to you, since you are their customer!!!!!! They should be more than happy to tell you how they prepare their wheatgrass, and why it taste the way it does!!!!
This is some info I have gotten on wheatgrass. Wheatgrass, if it is cut too early, will be extremely sweet; in addition to being sweet, the grass hasn’t reached it’s nutritional peak yet. If you wait too long to harvest the wheatgrass, it will taste very bitter. The best time to cut wheatgrass in order to have the highest nutritional content with the best taste, comes from grass cut when it is about 6-10 inches tall. Good luck in finding out the truth!!!

I ask her to try AFA in capsules, about 2 capsules in single serving and in less than a week the pain was gone. Now she could even travel in different countries.

I learned that it is only AFA that could release more adult stem cells naturally from our own bone marrow. These stem cells takes care in regenerating new cells in various organs of our body.

If you want to know more about AFA, try visiting these websites:

If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email. Glad to be of help.

I suffer from severe nerve damage due to growths in my spinal cord, caused by a birth defect. I’ve been on a raw vegetable-heavy vegan diet for several years and have been juicing like crazy for about six months. Ive noticed a big difference in the nausea and fatigue caused by neurological disturbances and mess from wheatgrass (about three ounces a day, in addition to 16 ounces of green juice and 6 ounces of lemon, garlic, cayenne combo juice). Also, my skin looks fantastic. I’m having a difficult time finding info on juices that can ease chronic pain and spasms associated with spinal cord injury. Anyone have suggestions? 26 year old female.

I am a RDH I would guess the reason for the clearing up of bad breath is due to the vitamins and nutrients needed to keep the connective tissue (gums) healthy. Vitamin C is essential to keep the gumd healthy! Fun Fact: Sailors were called Limeys because they would take citrus fruit to avoid scurvy. (sure they had no enamel left but healthy gums!)

      Hi Michael,
Wheatgrass is highly alkaline and you can freely add that to any freshly squeezed fruit. To make it more alkaline make sure that the fruit that you are going to use is low in sugar.

    Kristen,

I’m very happy to hear you are doing well. You should be commended for researching other things to help yourself cure from cancer. I truly believe that this is a remarkable product that has countless benefits. To bad something as wonderful as this is not available in our hospitals, to help other heal. IA, chemo and radiation are not very effective, and really do weaken the immune system. I read a book on chemo, and we know carcinegons cause cancer, and chemo is cytotoxic drugs, so basically the book says why would you use something to cure cancer when it gives you cancer. This is an incredible story, and am glad you are continuing the road to good health. Sometimes we are so brainwashed into thinking that it is effective, and sometimes we are degraded for looking into other treatments. Cheers Kristen, I guess we will have to settle for wheatgrass, although I’d prefer red wine, which is also beneficial for the heart.

  71. Maria Reply

To the posters above, yes wheatgrass will be very benefical as you are going through chemo and radation. It will allow your body all the nutrients it needs, and also those treatments will not have such a gruelling affect on your body. To the poster wgose mom has cancer, yes wheatgrass will definitely benefit your mom. Another juice that is in close relation to wheatgrass is barley grass juice. A lot of juice bars don’t carry this one for some reason, but it has the same incredbile benefits, and well as E3 live is also another good one, that has even more chlorphyll than wheatgrass. The women who first founded wheatgrass was Ann Wigmore, and she was diagonised with colon cancer. She started on green juice, but more importantly focused on wheatgrass and was cancer free within one year. The tragic thing was she didn’t die of cancer, but died in a house fire. how tragic, but because of her discovery she has helped countless people.

I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer which had metastasized to my liver in lungs back in February of 2010. I have been staying at the Optimum Health Institute in San Diego for the last three months, and a couple of weeks ago I had a live blood cell analysis and the cancer is gone from my body. The mainstay of the program is the wheatgrass. We juice it ourselves and drink 4 ounces a day. We also do colonics and enemas, and do an “implant” of wheatgrass afterwards which is simply putting the wheatgrass up your other end and trying to hold it. That cleanses the liver and replaces the electrolytes lost in the enema or colonic. I truly believe wheatgrass can help the body heal from anything. It one of the best kept secrets! I hope this post gets out to those who need it. Cancer is curable — Please do not do chemo and radiation — those will weaken your immune system. Supplements like wheatgrass will help to strengthen the immune system to help the body heal itself. One must also have strong faith that healing is possible — don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!!!

Thoughout the remainder of the day and through the night, 6 oz. pomagranate jucie, 8 oz. orange juice, a light to moderate dinner. I end the night w/a source of high of acidophilus, and a high source of yogurt, containing enzymes which promotes in my digestion. Needless to say I suffer greatly from gastro-intestenal maladies, for which I am always seeking medical attention. I hope that with the addition of wheat grass to my diet, my gastro-intestenol health will reap healthy benefits. I also enjoy brisk walks three times a day with my dogs daily.
