More Scientific Proof Supporting the Alkaline Diet

alkaline diet proofAnother top scientific research journal has published findings that prove that the alkaline diet is beneficial to human health.

The article, published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism states that compounds in alkaline-forming plant foods, help preserve bone and muscle mass.

The study (abstract here) was conducted by researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, in Boston, Mass.

Here is the context (background/reason) and objective of the research:

Context: Protein is an essential component of muscle and bone. However, the acidic byproducts of protein metabolism may have a negative impact on the musculoskeletal system, particularly in older individuals with declining renal function.

Objective: We sought to determine whether adding an alkaline salt, potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3), allows protein to have a more favorable net impact on intermediary indices of muscle and bone conservation than it does in the usual acidic environment.

They tested two groups – one being given the alkaline salts and one given a placebo. Both groups then went through a period of a high protein diet and a low protein diet.

The researchers found that diets high in protein but low in alkaline foods led to a state of acidosis, particularly in later life due to protein metabolism throwing acids into the bloodstream in amounts that override the alkalising effect of potassium and bicarbonate in plant foods (remember – the most alkaline minerals are potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium).

However, the alkaline group were able to better handle and metabolise the protein, giving their body all of the benefits of the protein without the damage caused to bone and muscle mass that is caused when in an acidic state.

My takeout of this is:

Consuming and living an alkaline lifestyle is clearly beneficial in a huge number of ways, but this article shows that when we are alkaline the body is able to function most efficiently. I personally have a higher than average protein intake because I hit the gym three times per week, however, it is good to know that my body is able to process and use this protein safely.

I worry for some of my gym buddies that definitely live an acidic lifestlye and throw in 150-200g of protein every day. Sure they may be bigger than me now, but I think they are setting themselves up for one hell of a fall in later life!

Overall, this is more proof to me that there is efficacy in the alkaline diet. More and more research articles are being published in top-ranked scientific journals that are proving that the benefits of this approach to health are beyond question.

Have a great day and let me know your thoughts below!

I forgot to add re. how too much protein can be harmful. I also combine alkalizing with raw foods and as long as you eat plenty of vegetables – especially green – then you will get an abundance of protein that your body needs. I also use Anthony Robbins product range as it has a potent green powder that I add to my alkalizing water – great stuff!

Hi, my family and I switched to a more alkaline diet a few months ago and we have really noticed huge benefits in our overall wellbeing. Especially for my daughter who has suffered since birth from allergies, eczema and asthma. We drink alkalizing water every day and use an Alkalark as it alkalizes the water and adds extra minerals. I really am so thankful that I discovered this and I can’t believe that this information isn’t in the mainstream. I’ve bought many products from you – including pH drops – and I’d like to thank you for providing such a great informative site and extensive product range. I also hope to be going to the Dr Robert Young event in London. Best wishes, Erica
