The Alkaline Water Q&A (2015) — The Most Important Questions Answered


Since 26th March, when I opened my Alkaline Water Q&A I have been asked and answered over 290 questions personally…

All of your most burning questions have now been answered here.

Below are the SIX most important questions that were asked, many times over, during the Q&A. If you’re at all interested in hydrating properly with alkaline water I strongly advise you read this all the way through.

It is a fantastic overview of the most important, burning questions that the majority of people have when they first get started:

Question 1: Alkaline Water & Digestion

A lot of people have this question, and I can understand why. Firstly, because a lot of people selling alternative filters to the ionizers and alkaline water filters in general.

It seems intuitive if you take a face-value look at body biology that the stomach needs to be acid, so putting something alkaline in there could upset this?

If that were the case then eating green foods, salads, and vegetables would be bad for your stomach too, right? They’re alkaline, so they’d upset that acidic stomach, right?

Well, not really, no.

The biology of the body is rarely as simple and straightforward as that.

The first thing to note is this: the stomach is not just a big pouch of acid, sloshing around waiting for food and drink to drop in.

The stomach produces hydrochloric acid (HCl) on demand, and when it does so, it also creates sodium bicarbonate.

These two – HCl and sodium bicarbonate are produced based upon what you eat or drink. The pH of the stomach is always 4 so it is based around this.

When you drink alkaline water, the pH of the stomach goes up, and the body produces more HCl in response (and this extra acid is a good thing – read on) – as the pH of the stomach has to remain at around pH 4.

Even though HCl is a very strong acid, it’s a beneficial acid with a very key role; but it’s an acidic role that is limited to the stomach.

And the more alkaline water you drink, the more HCl produced. Again this is a good thing.

Yep – the more alkaline water the more acid is made. BUT, this extra acid, in this specific role, is not a bad thing. It’s actually a very good thing.

Remember, when the body produces HCl it also creates sodium bicarbonate. The HCl stays in the stomach and this sodium bicarbonate is sent into the blood stream to be delivered to other digestive organs such as the liver and pancreas.

The liver produces bile, and the pancreas produce pancreatic juice, which contains enzymes and sodium bicarbonate.

Again, the more HCl that is produced, the more bicarbonate is produced.

(Keep in mind also that the alkaline, ionized water is also neutralizing any excess HCl in the stomach, so it’s not building up – this is why ionized water is so beneficial for people with reflux.)

The fact that more bicarbonate is being produced is important.

Sodium (as well as potassium) bicarbonate acts as an acid buffer in the body.

After the food in the stomach is digested, it travels to the small intestine. At this point IF YOU HAVE NOT CONSUMED


So in simple terms: eat acidic foods, you don’t get the sodium bicarbonate production, there is no alkaline buffer and the next stage of digestion after the stomach NEEDS this alkaline pH.

It goes:

Drink Alkaline Water (or eat alkaline foods) > Lots of HCl produced for the digestive role in the stomach > Lots of sodium bicarbonate ALSO produced for the digestive role after the stomach.

Without enough alkalinity there is a huge knock on effect to the rest of the body.

This is why alkaline forming foods are HEALTHY foods like vegetables, leafy greens, salads, low-sugar fruits, nuts, seeds, healthy oils, oily fish and so on…

And acidic foods are UNHEALTHY foods like sugar, trans-fats, fast foods, refined foods, cakes, biscuits, chocolate, pizza, chips and so on.

Put it this way: if drinking alkaline water was bad for digestion, then someone eating alkaline foods all day would get pretty sick right? But show me someone eating loads of greens, salads, veggies, fish, oils and no sugar, refined foods and so on who has digestive troubles…

I hope this all makes sense and helps!

Question 2: Best Way to Make Alkaline Water

The seven most common ways of making alkaline water are all covered in depth in the Definitive Guide to Alkaline Water, which you’ve already been emailed, but in short there is the best way, and the most affordable way.

The best way is with a Chanson Ionizer. There is a cost, but I’ll explain how it pays for itself in just a minute.

The Chanson Ionizer:

  • Produces water with a pH YOU chose from pH 3 and below up to pH 12 and above – including the perfect pH 9.5 drinking water
  • Filters the water to be clean and clear of chlorine, toxins, bacteria, sediments, pesticides, metals and more
  • Produces water with a strong antioxidant capacity (called Oxidation Reduction Potential – i.e. reduces oxidation – ORP) that is stronger than green tea, pomegranate juice etc.
  • Structures the water to make it more easily absorbable and therefore more hydrating
  • Just switching to drinking this water will make a huge difference to your energy, your health, your weight, your immune system, fights inflammation, reduces acidity and so much more.

    Being properly hydrated with this ideal water is just wonderful for your body.

    And it really does pay for itself.

    When you look at the alternatives for making alkaline water (and lemon water doesn’t count, I’ll get onto why in a moment), they all have a recurring cost.

    Tap water is simply not acceptable. We know that now. And if you don’t know that – you’ve got to watch my video next week, it will blow your mind.

    So, bottled water, if you drink you necessary 3-4 litres today (and we can call it 3), then you’d be looking at a cost of about $2-3 per day (and we can call it $2).

    That alone is $60 per month.

    Then to make this acidic, oxidising bottled water alkaline, you’d need to add drops, which would be an additional $60 per month.

    And even then, it’s not filtered and doesn’t have the antioxidant benefit.

    Add to this the monthly savings of:

    • using the acid water to replace all of the chemical cleaning products in your home (it’s antiseptic, antibacterial, cleans glass, kitchen and bathroom surfaces and more)
    • using acid water as a odour treatment, stain treatment and more
    • using the mild acid water as a makeup remover, toner, moisturiser
    • using the strong alkaline water to remove pesticides and chemicals from fruits and vegetables
      and heaps more uses…

    Most people find that they save an additional $30-$40 per month using the strong alkaline and acid water in their home and on their body too.

    Now, onto the cheaper option…

    Probaby the most cost effective is the alkaline stick. This will raise your water up by about 0.5 to 1 pH. So if your tap water is 7, it will make it between 7.5 and 8.

    It does this by running the water over a lot of little ceramic mineral balls. It’s the equivalent to infusing the water with a tiny pinch of minerals.

    But you get no filtration, no antioxidant benefit, the alkaline benefit is small, but OK and the water is not structured (which is really important).

    It’s a great little option for on-the-go and it’s got an added benefit with the ionized water from the Chanson.

    When used with ionized water, it makes the water stay ionized indefinitely. This is why I am including a free Alkaline Stick with every Chanson bought in my upcoming special next week. They go together really well.

    The other methods: adding minerals, pH drops, reverse osmosis, distillers, jugs and so on all have big downsides (i.e. pH drops have the ongoing cost and no filtration) or simply don’t do the job (reverse osmosis and distilled leaves the water acidic and oxidising), so I’d stick with the two above.

    Question 3: Is Ionized Water Artificial for the Body?

    This is an interesting question, and similar to the first question, to the naked eye you’d have thought it is artificial.

    But the whole point of the ionizer technology is to replicate nature as closely as possible!

    In nature, the purest, most natural water is clean and unpolluted, alkaline, mineral-rich, has been crashing over rocks, down rivers, waterfalls and this friction and movement gives it a tiny electrical charge which gives the –ORP antioxidant capacity.

    This is precisely what the ionizer does – it replicates this water from nature. It makes it alkaline, mineral rich, clean, filtered water with a tiny electrical charge to give it the –ORP.

    A friend once referred to ionized water as ‘waterfall water’ – I really like this.

    The point is that the ionizer does not do anything to the water that nature does not already do in the purest springs.

    Question 4: Can I Just Use Lemon/Sodium

    These two very cheap methods are very tempting and they both have their place.

    Lemon water is great to kick off the day. It’s delicious, comforting, tastes and feels great after eight hours of sleep-mouth, gets your metabolism going, your digestive system going and starts your hydration for the day.

    But the alkaline benefit is very small. You certainly couldn’t rely on lemon water as being your source of alkaline water, that’s for sure.

    It has its role and it’s place and it’s brilliant for that. I have it every single day, as soon as I wake. But it’s not making truly alkaline water.

    Using sodium or alkaline minerals is great to help buffer acids and add more alkaline minerals to your diet. But that’s it, it’s not a source of alkaline water. It’s a supplement.

    I recommend getting an alkaline mineral supplement like this (I love pH Miracle’s pHour Salts) and using it once a day.

    But don’t see this as your source of making pH 9.5 water. You’d need to use dozens of spoonfuls a day, and frankly, that would not be good for you. In fact, it becomes dangerous having this much sodium per day.

    Question 5: Is There Proof?

    There is proof, absolutely! Proof that ionized water is beneficial for:

    – Preventing oxidative stress
    – Protecting DNA
    – Anti-diabetic
    – Protects from cell damage
    – Prevents reflux
    – Prevents weight gain
    – Strengthens bones
    – Surpresses cancer cells
    – Stops hangovers!
    – Reduces glucose, tryglycerides and cholesterol in the blood
    – Inhibits tumors
    – Improves digestion
    – And more!

    Question 6: What about bottled water that says it’s alkaline?

    I have tested hundreds of bottled waters, and they have all been acidic. From mild to massively acidic.

    Even when they say they are alkaline on the label, it’s one of the biggest rip-offs around.

    When you see a pH on the label of a bottled water, this is the pH at source, not what you are drinking.

    And after being hot-filled, stored in plastic, kept on a warehouse and shop shelf for at least six months before you buy it – that water is acidic, oxidising and likely has had the plastic leech into it, even if just a little bit.

    It’s not ideal.

    Plus bottled water is actually held to less strict testing standards than TAP water!

    And it costs a lot. Every day. Forever.

    PHEW that was a lot of questions to answer on my own!

    I am chemical engineering and i care my nutrition and health. in my opinion, it is so important that what we drink or eat daily.
    Respectfully, I have a question about alkaline ionized water bottle, Which is sold commercially. I have some information about production of electrolyzed water technology. as i study in some articles, hard water (water with minerals such as calcium bicarbonate) electrolyzed in a electrolysis cell and Hydroxide is produced. As i knew, calcium and magnesium hydroxide are insoluble in water. But we don’t see any white residue in commercial alkaline ionized water bottle. These particles (as an alkaline agents) are probably filtered, my question is ” if calcium and magnesium hydroxide are filtered, why this water have pH 9 or high??”

    Is it safe to drink the water having pH 10? Or more? Please reply soon.

      Not beneficial, potentially harmful. There is a law of diminishing returns here. Most don’t need to go over pH 9.

    I was surprised that alkaline water could be so beneficial to your health. Like you said, the more alkaline water you drink, the more HCl is produced. HCl helps to regulate the stomach’s acids and helps the sodium bicarbonate to travel throughout the body to help keep the acids in check.
