Artificial Sweeteners – The Story Continues…

sweeteners

Although it never makes too much sense to rely on findings from a single source, I am blogging about this research as it is so hot off the press and so relevant to my post last week about sweeteners!

Prof. David Benton has reported in the highly credible Nutrition Research Review that although the sugar substitutes may initially help weight loss, they might actually lead to gains in the longer term.

As reported on IC Wales, dieters may compensate for the lack of sugar by eating other foods such as proteins and fats and that:

…the low-calorie craze could end up having little or no impact on Britain’s obesity crisis.

Quite sensibly, and just to reinforce the message, he opts for the KISS (keep it simple stupid) approach of:

Slimmers would be better off trying to eat produce that is high in water content and low in fat – like fruit and vegetables…The control of weight is a lifestyle issue. There are no simple buttons that if pressed will solve the problem.”

It is really pleasing to see this more and more in the mass media now, the concept that being healthy is actually a straight-forward process of eating more of the right foods and exercising regularly rather than looking for ways to cut corners.

So good on you Prof. Benton!
