The Alkaline Diet Q&As

Hi all – every day I answer somewhere between 10-50 alkaline diet questions. So I have decided I should share some of the best!

So each week I’ll be posting the best and most relevant alkaline diet Q&A so that all of you can benefit from my answers!

Get more Energy!

Hi Ross,

I came across your site and I really think that you are a genuine person who wants to add value. I want to buy your recipe book, which I think is a great idea for a beginner. I have had many approaches to the alkaline diet but I pretty much failed miserably at each one.

Can you guide me to :

1 Have more energy (when I eat salad every day and meal I am feeling without power and when I start introducing rice and potatoes that is ok but my digestion is not that good for them and I get tired)

2 Gain 5 Kg of muscle mass (I am1.80 cm and 75 Kg)

3 Maintain this way of life easily ?

Also I have a few questions:

Calories, how much? Or how much greens to eat everyday?

How expensive is to eat alkaline?(right now I have a budget of about $300 a month for food)

Thanks for your answer and help.

Ross’ Answer

Hi

If calories/protein and muscle gain are your concern, I recommend using oils of course, but also having quinoa, some of the less acidic grains and lots of pulses.  Coconut oil, milk and cream can also be a great source of calories during the day too.

For most people a combination of these ingredients plus some extra protein (which I’ll get onto) not only decreases hunger, but also increases satiation and muscle gain.  These are the foods I’d try to incorporate more of:

  • quinoa
  • oily fish
  • hemp/flax oils on salads
  • pulses: chickpeas, lentils, kidney beans, canellini beans etc
  • less acidic grains: buckwheat, spelt
  • coconut products: cream, milk & oil
  • lots of avocado
  • nut butters, especially almond butter (spread onto celery is a divine snack)
  • for additional protein if needed – add tofu, almond or soy milk, organic oats and an alkaline, sprouted hemp protein powder (I recommend Sun Warrior)

Add an additional alkaline smoothie to your day, such as: https://liveenergized.com/2012/01/11/alkaline-diet-recipe-antioxidant-green-smoothie/ –> adding some silken tofu to this can bulk and add lots of calories/protein too.

As for my recipe book I recommend the Alkaline Diet Recipe Book Vol. 2 as it has the nutritional breakdown of each recipe in it, so could be a useful reference for you: https://liveenergized.com/redirecttransition

The recipe book (especially the bonuses) will help make things much easier for you as not only do you have lots of variety with the recipes, but it also comes with lots of menu plans to try.

I hope this helps!

Ross

First I want to thank you so much for your highly informative web site and all your enthusiasm you are showing in respect of the alkaline lifestyle. It was only a few weeks ago that I started reading up on the subject of alkaline diet, and was immediately consumed by the subject. I started doing researches and keep finding contradictions regarding some foods such as fruit. I love fruit, I just can’t get enough of it. I come from a Mediterranean country and year round we have an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables right from the garden. According to some experts, fruit should be always included in your regular diet. But you claim that fruit should be avoided. Two very polarized views. Could you please give me some advice?
    Thanks!
    Cheers
