Health and Diet News Round-up: Fat and Fats

All of the news and articles I am reading today seem to be fat crazy!

• Children at Risk of Early Death as Obesity Rises: from the independent.co.uk, highlights that child obesity has risen from 1 in 10 in 1995 to 1 in 7 in 2003 and that the number of children being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (of which being overweight is a major cause) has risen ten-fold to reach 100 per year. Bear in mind that type 2 diabetes is usually something that effects people in their 30’s or 40’s. The article places the Government’s lack of ability to curb this trend as the main reason, with British children being one of the most unhealthy in Europe. An interesting, if scary read.
• Aussie Fat Crisis: hot on the heels of the Aussies getting their own series of the Biggest Loser a health report has been released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing that 62% of men and 45% of women in Australia are obsese or overweight. Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has stated that he plans to convene a health summit which he hopes will become a national event. In light of the Independent’s article above, maybe Mr Blair should start taking some more positive steps…
• Ex-England ‘Keeper David James on His Healthy Lifestyle: This is a nice little article in the telegraph.co.uk. I have always been a fan of David James as a person (from interviews and articles etc.) if not as a keeper and this little interview shows he is quite switched on with his lifestyle. The best take-away points (advice if you will) are: a) see food as fuel, not as anything else; b) don’t rely on cold remedies and medicines to make you well, use nutrition; c) find nutritious alternatives for snacks; d) have something you enjoy to help you unwind when stressed. Oh, and enjoy sunrises – they are the best.

I hope to do more of these little round-ups, because I think they might be quite useful. We’ll see…
