More Anti-Depressant Side Effects – Is Medication Always the Only Answer?

depression

The Cornell Medical Centre in New York, has released a report showing that the popular anti-depressant drug, Prozac, could be damaging male fertility. Although the Medical Centre only identified the problem in two of their patients – the reaction was so severe (their sperm count was reduced to almost zero) that they fear that this problem could easily be widespread.

Now, there have been many, many articles written about the ability to fight depression and other mental disorders with nutrition and alternative approaches (see here, here, here, here, here, and here) – as well as many articles highlighting the problems associated with using chemicals to treat mental disorders (just see here, there are lots of articles listed there).

So one must ask the question – why are people never offered the natural route? I know three or four people who have gone to see their doctor during periods of stress and have been immediately given anti-depressants, no questions asked. Just like that.

This is even more frustrating when one considers that the cause of depression in many people can be directly linked to malnutrition/lacking essential nutrients – (see here, here, here and here).

So why is this? The links seem to be strong between diet and depression, there seem to be many adverse side effects with using anti-depressant drugs and there seems to be a strong correlation between using diet to fight depression once diagnosed.

Could it be that this is another one of those strange situations whereby human health and life is put second behind the profit line of the big pharmas?

Hmmmmm

So, who is likely to pay for “large well-designed trials?” Not likely drug businesses. It will take lots of hard work — and collective action — to get establishment funders to attend to this.

If you look back 20 years anti depressant pills were not dished out so easily… It is a social problem that we all face in a coonsumer society… We need and demand the quick fix. Natural remedies require self discipline, effort and time. So why bother… pop that pill… We see this effect with everything, diet pills, can stick to a regime of health and fitness… pop a pill, kids too hyper… give them a pill… Soon, meals are too long to eat … pop a pill. This is turning into an Aldus Huxley world…

Medication is sometimes the only remedy in curing medical problems, but nature provides a variety of plants to help us, too. It would be better if doctors thought first about prescribing natural remedies, since they are known to have very few, if any, side effects.
