Study Reveals: Vegetables are Good For You Shocker!

Who would have thought it! As reported here in the telegraph.co.uk:

“Elements in vegetable protein, rather than meat protein, can reduce or control blood pressure.

The research supports other studies of diet in vegetarians compared with meat-eaters which have found lower blood pressure in people who do not eat meat.”

Although this study really only further enforces what we already know, to be fair to Prof Paul Elliot – this study did include 4,680 people (2,359 men and 2,321 women) aged 40 to 59 years from four countries and so does hold a fair amount of credibility.

This makes great reading for myself and I am sure it will do to many others who follow a meat-free lifestyle.

However, the journalists covering this research (particularly in the telegraph.co.uk article) do tend to sensationalise the divide between either eating meat or not. The end notes by Prof. Elliot actually state:

“Our results are consistent with current recommendations that a diet high in vegetable products be part of a healthy lifestyle for prevention of high blood pressure and related chronic diseases.”

…which to me more reinforce the promotion of a balanced diet rich in vegetables rather than a strict either meat-free or meat-full lifestyle.
