Study: Acidic Water Increases Likelihood of Type 1 Diabetes

I have literally just stumbled upon this study, published in the September 2002 issue of Diabetes Care, a journal for health care practitioners, which has shown a direct link between acidic drinking water and the childhood-onset of type 1 diabetes.

This is absolutely fascinating, but not surprising.

The study design was:

“We designed a population-based case-control study with 64 cases of type 1 diabetes and 250 randomly selected control subjects. Acidity, color, and mineral content were measured in tap water from each participant’s household.”

The study concludes:

We found a strong association between acidity in drinking water and risk of type 1 diabetes

I am obviously convinced that staying hydrated is one of the single most important things you can do for your health and energy. However, drinking the right water is absolutely vital.

From our experience, we strongly believe that the right water is alkaline water, or at least pH neutral. Acidic water, whilst still being thirst-quenching, is only going to make your body become less alkaline, which in turn can lead to a whole host of health and energy problems.

Tap water is acidic in nature, with a pH level of 6.5 to 8.5. The acidic nature of tap water can have damaging effects on your health and home by corroding pipes, metals (such as silverware), and other surfaces that it comes into contact with. Ingesting acidic tap water can result in lowered pH and stress to the body that causes all manner of health issues.

Alkaline water can be a beneficial solution to acidic tap water. Alkalinity acts as a buffer in your body, helping to neutralize acidity that may come from acidic tap water or acidic foods. With an alkaline pH of 8 or higher, alkaline water helps to restore balance in your body, balancing acidic and alkaline levels.

Trace minerals are also beneficial to your health when ingested through alkaline water. These trace minerals provide essential micronutrients for optimal health and help support the body’s natural detoxification process by flushing out toxins.

Making sure that you get enough alkaline water and minerals in your diet is essential for good health. By drinking alkaline-rich water, you can help to maintain a healthy acidic-alkaline pH balance in your body, as well as provide beneficial trace minerals that can’t be found in acidic tap water.
